John Andrew "Drew" Updike, MD

With over a dozen years practicing hospital medicine and building provider teams in Colorado, Dr. Drew Updike has a reputation as an authentic leader, a public health advocate, and a patient-centric bedside physician.

After completing medical school at Tulane University, followed by Internal Medicine residency at Brown University, his career began locally at Boulder Community Health as a hospitalist, where he became the Physician Advisor for Care Management, Utilization Management, and Clinical Documentation Integrity. He collaborated across health systems and into post-acute facilities, on the Boulder County Care Transitions Collaborative. During this time, he also became an active member of the medical community, serving on the Boulder County Medical Society (BCMS) Board of Directors.

In the years that followed, Dr. Updike was the Inpatient Medicine Director of Broomfield Hospital, growing its census and creation of an Inpatient Rehab Facility, as well as shepherding it through the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. He subsequently practiced hospital medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital, for community hospitals in rural and underserved areas of the state, and in Louisiana and British Columbia.

Leaning into the skills gained from his Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Health Systems Management from Tulane University, he has served as the Senior Medical Director of the UCHealth Revenue Cycle team, consulted nationally on regulatory affairs for large non-profit and academic systems through his work for CorroHealth, and published in industry outlets and peer-reviewed journals on payer/provider relationships, as well as government involvement in healthcare. He was recently voted into an upcoming term on the American Case Management Association's (ACMA) Colorado Chapter Board of Directors.

He lives with his wife, two sons, and extended family in Boulder, where his hobbies include tireless parenting, running, tennis, travel, and coffee with co-workers/friends. He is ecstatic to be a member of the Summit team!
